Arizona-style Immigration Law in Nebraska
August 5th, 2010
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman says he will work with the state’s attorney general to craft an immigration law similar to that signed into law in Arizona.
Mr. Heineman said he’s working with Attorney General Jon Bruning to see if a bill can be fashioned for the upcoming legislative session in 2011.
The governor noted that he will work with the state’s top attorney in an effort to address problems in the Arizona law. He noted that Nebraska residents want immigration reform, not racial profiling.
“What Nebraskans do not want is law enforcement walking down the street in Lincoln or any other community, and walk up to you and say, ‘Prove you’re and American citizen.’ That would be racial profiling in a magnitude we would not agree to,” Mr. Heineman said.
The Nebraska governor said was not concerned with potential legal challenges. He also took time to score some political points by criticizing federal officials.
“They need to do their job, every single one of them, from the President of the United States to House members to the Senate. They ran for office. We pay them big bucks. Make a decision,” he said.
